Me and the kids were supposed to be heading through to Edinburgh to join a 'Pose to Expose' march today organised by a great local AR group, Edinburgh Fur-Free City. It's a really active group involved in lots of peaceful protests but mainly targeting the fur trade in Edinburgh. There's a lot of it going on, not least because a key aspect of traditional Scottish dress is the sporran - basically a fur purse - and Edinburgh with its thriving tourist trade does brisk business when it comes to kilts and the like.
One thing led to another this morning and with number 1 son still not himself, by the time we got out of the house we were running late. Which meant we arrived late, which meant everyone had left already. And despite playing 'hunt the man dressed as a rabbit' through the streets of Edinburgh for a while, we eventually gave up and headed home.
A real shame as I'd got McGonnagle super stoked-up and thinking about what fur was and where it comes from. She was really looking forward to it - even insisting on wearing my 'superhero' SSOV T-shirt to mark the occasion!
I've already promised the tyro-activist that we'll make the next protest - and as there's a mobile demo every Saturday that shouldn't be too hard - but I hope that Varda - the tireless and amazing dynamo behind EFFC - along with all the other guys who showed on time had the desired effect on those anachronistic retailers who still think that adorning their wares with the skins of dead animals somehow enhances them. I'll be checking out the website to see how they got on...
